nCeO2 particles localize within fibroblastic nodules. NHLFs were treated with 0.2 μg/cm2 of the indicated nanoparticle for 48 h. Following the treatments, cells were fixed, stained, and mounted onto glass, laser cut slides. Enhanced darkfield microscopy using the CytoViva illumination system revealed that the nanoparticles (bright spots) are localized on and around the fibroblastic nodules, suggesting that the accumulated particles may play a role in the initiation or formation of the nodules
