The figure shows cytokine-release on the apical versus the basolateral side of the 3D tri-culture after 20 h exposure. Cells in the apical compartment were pre-treated for 1 h with and without interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-IRA; 30 μg/ml), and exposed for 20 h with and without Si10 (24 μg/cm2) or Min-U-Sil (192 μg/ cm2) in the presence of the antagonist.
