Quantitative RT-PCR gene expression data for IL-8 collected following a 24 h exposure of HAEC to increasing doses of the amphibole samples plotted with respect to (A) total surface area dose determined by gas adsorption and BET theory expressed as the log of the total surface area of the mineral particles per cellular surface area in units of cm2/cm2 and (B) elongated mineral particle (EMP) surface area calculated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) expressed as the log of the surface area of particles with aspect ratio ≥ 3:1 per cellular surface area in units of cm2/cm2.
