Nanoparticles altered cell morphology. Hearts were fixed, cut into sections and polymerized. Sections were analyzed with an electronic transmission microscope JEOL 1010 equipped with a Hamamatsu camera system. Images are shown at direct magnification between 8000 and 80000x. In control hearts, the integrity of the tissue (Z bands, nucleus, sarcomeric unit and mitochondria) is observed. E171 induced alteration mainly in mitochondria, while ZnO NPs induced the appearance of lysosomes and altered mitochondria).
